I made up a fake college superstition because I was embarrassed, and apparently people still do it seven years later

During my first year of college there was an old side entrance to one of our lecture buildings that constantly got stuck. One morning I was fighting with the door while two people behind me waited. I pulled, pushed, looked like an idiot, then finally smacked the brass plate next to the handle twice and yanked it open. One of them asked why I hit the plate. Instead of admitting I was frustrated, I said, "You tap it twice before an exam for good luck." Completely made it up. For the next few weeks I occasionally saw those same people do it. Then their friends started doing it. By my final year I'd sometimes walk past and see people tapping that stupid plate who I had never met in my life. I graduated and basically forgot about it. Yesterday my cousin, who just started at the same college, sent me a video from campus. In the background a group walked through that entrance and two of them tapped the plate. She casually said, "That's the exam luck thing." I nearly dropped my phone. It's been seven years. There was never an exam luck thing. It was me losing a fight with a door.
