Is intimacy is required for a healthy relationship?

When I was in college, I met a boy who was very caring and protective towards me. I always thought of him as a brother and responded to him in a sisterly manner. But one day, one of his friends told me that he had loved me for almost a year and was waiting for me, even though I was not interested in love. Seeing him cry and hurt changed my mind, and I fell for him. It was good in the beginning, but eventually, he always demanded intimacy, which I was not willing to do. He used to fight and argue, asking why I didn't trust him, and later, he stopped texting. Whenever he was turned on, he would text me, ask for the same thing, and then fight again. Now I am so confused and don't even know what to do.
