I busted my HR’s dark secret
My manager asked me to help HR interview candidates for a new position in our department. Apparently, they wanted someone experienced to assess their technical skills. The first candidate walked in, and I immediately noticed something strange. His job description was practically identical to mine: same responsibilities, same department, and same qualifications. I asked HR whether someone was leaving, but she said it was a newly created position. Out of curiosity, I checked our recruitment portal later that evening. The vacancy had been created three months ago, and my employee ID was attached to it. I started digging and discovered that several employees who had supposedly resigned voluntarily had been replaced by people hired through a recruitment agency owned by the HR director’s brother. The company was also paying salaries to employees who apparently didn’t exist. I thought I had uncovered a straightforward corruption scheme until an IT friend told me to stop investigating. Apparently, I wasn’t the first person to notice. Yesterday, I received an email confirming that my resignation had been processed. I had never resigned. I checked the paperwork, and everything was there, including my signature. Then I noticed the date. The resignation had been submitted six months ago, and the HR director had approved it. The strangest part was that my manager had countersigned it. He was the one who hired me three years ago, and he swore he had no idea what I was talking about. Tomorrow, I’m attending a meeting with HR to discuss my “voluntary departure.” According to the system, I’m already unemployed. According to my bank account, I’m still getting paid. And according to the recruitment portal, I’ve already interviewed my replacement. The candidate’s name is my manager’s.
