Taco bells hot sauce "will you marry me?" Ruined my life.
It was never supposed to be a proposal.
It was a joke.
We weren’t even at some fancy restaurant. We were literally just sitting in my car eating Taco Bell.
She asked me to hand her a hot sauce packet.
“Look at this one,” I said, smiling.
She took it from me, read it, and froze.
And it read "Will you marry me?"
Her eyes went wide.
Then she covered her mouth and whispered, “Oh my God…”
My stomach dropped.
I opened my mouth to explain—
But she looked at me like I’d just done something brave.
Like I was someone I wasn’t.
“You… you mean it?” she asked, voice shaking.
I panicked.
Because in that moment, I saw it all: the hope in her face, the way her whole world seemed to brighten.
And I realized something awful.
If I told the truth, I would crush her.
I would be the guy who handed her a fake proposal by accident. The guy who made her feel stupid for believing in something sweet.
And I couldn’t do it.
I was too much of a coward.
So instead of saying, “No, it’s just Taco Bell,”
I swallowed hard and said…
“Yeah.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes?” she asked.
My heart was pounding so loud I could barely hear myself.
“Yes,” I repeated, even though it wasn’t even a question I’d meant to ask.
She started laughing and crying at the same time, throwing her arms around me.
And I just sat there, holding her, feeling like I was watching someone else’s life happen.
Because now I was trapped inside a moment I hadn’t chosen.
Weeks passed.
Everyone knew.
Her parents knew. Her friends knew. People congratulated me like I’d done something incredible.
And every time someone smiled at me, I felt worse.
Because the truth was, I hadn’t been brave.
I hadn’t been romantic.
I’d just been scared.
Scared to break her heart.
Scared to admit I wasn’t the kind of man who made big gestures.
So I went along with it.
I bought a ring because it was too late not to.
I planned a wedding because the lie had grown roots.
And the whole time, that stupid hot sauce packet sat in my drawer like evidence.
On the day we got married, she looked so happy walking down the aisle.
And I remember thinking:
This is what I get for being a coward.
Not because I didn’t love her.
I did.
But because I never meant to start our forever with an accident I was too afraid to correct.
And when people ask how I proposed, she always laughs and says:
“Taco Bell.”
Everyone thinks it’s the cutest story.
Only I know it started with me being too scared to tell the truth.
