I've been her silent cheerleader for 20 years
I dated a girl in college for about six months. We got along really well and never had any major conflicts. But I was graduating and moving away, while she still had several years of college ahead of her. I convinced myself that ending things was the right thing to do. We haven't spoken since.
I was really bothered by how much I hurt her. It still bothers me now. We both found other people, got married, had families, and built lives of our own in the decades that followed. And while I would never wish away my family or the life I've built, I do sometimes wish we could have remained friends. But I understand why we can't. After the way things ended, I have no reason to assume she'd ever even want to speak to me again. We're also entirely different people now.
So I've become her silent cheerleader. I don't go looking, but when I come across news of what she's accomplished, I am incredibly happy for her. She's done some amazing things academically, professionally, and personally. She'll never know it, but I've quietly rooted for her from afar all these years.
