I just realised that my guy friend is just a man at the end of the day
For context, I am from a country where patriarchy has deep, deep roots and basically defines our whole life. And this guy seemed educated and kind of different from the rest of the guys. He was very aware of politics, history, struggles, and everything, so I assumed he would understand how patriarchy affects our lives. we had a conversation, and I realized that I was wrong about him all this time. At the end of the conversation, after I left, I cried because I really thought he was different.
he’s a very smart guy. And every time he spoke, I just kept thinking: if he speaks like this, then what about the others? The average ones, who don’t really have opinions about the outside world?
I’m gonna give you one example, okay? I was telling him how, in our society, a man smoking outside is seen as normal. No one would even bat an eye. But if a woman smokes, people look at her differently, insult her, and might even approach her with bad intentions.
And he told me, “Oh, they do that because they actually care about women. You know smoking is bad, so they’re doing it because they care about women’s health. No one cares about our health.” This was just one of the many scenarios we talked about. There’s worse. hearing that from him was so disheartening. This honestly felt worse than heartbreak. I just realized that he’s one of them. I thought he was different. And the way he turned everything against women. Sorry this is more of a vent than a question. Has this ever happened to you?
