I just realized now, 10+ years later, why a high school acquaintance got annoyed on Facebook

Wow. The clarity came just today after at least a decade. Woman I went to high school with, who is Puerto Rican, posted something about their diffuser finally crapping out at a bad time. Now, i am a bald man, and even when i had hair i didnt exactly have a hair care ritual. So the diffuser one puts at the end of a hair drier wasn’t the first thing I thought of. I thought of the kind of diffuser that is a metal plate you put on a gas stove that spreads the heat of the flame across the surface of the pot equally. I asked “were you making sofrito?” She answered something like “why the hell would you ask me THAT?” The tone was annoyed, as is she was insulted. I let it go because I’m not about to get into an argument with anyone from high school while in my 30s (at the time). I figured it was more of the elitism I thought my high school classmates exhibited when I was in high school. Fuck her, right? And then today, my wife is on tik tok and someone is talking about how much they love their new space age diffuser and I remembered the exchange. “Why did she get so mad that I mistook one diffuser for another, it’s an honest mistake.” And then it occurred to me. I think she thought I was being racist. Puerto Rican woman making sofrito and blow drying her ethnic hair. That’s what I bet she thought I was thinking. No wonder she acted like I was being a huge dick. Well fuck.
