I swapped my friend's ninety dollar bottle of wine with cheap boxed wine last night and watched him pretend to taste the tannins.

My friend came over to my apartment yesterday to celebrate his new promotion. He brought this very fancy ninety-dollar bottle of vintage red wine that he had been hyping up in our group chat all week. While he was in the bathroom washing his hands, I tried opening it with my cheap corkscrew. The cork completely crumbled inside the neck, and when I tried pushing it down, the entire bottle slipped out of my hand and shattered all over my kitchen tile. Red wine was everywhere. I had about ninety seconds before he walked out, so I completely panicked. I grabbed the big glass decanter from my shelf, wiped the counter down with half a paper towel roll, and emptied three full glasses of cheap eight-dollar boxed wine from my fridge straight into the decanter. When he walked in, I told him I decanted his fancy bottle early so it could breathe. The next forty minutes were pure torture. He swirled the cheap wine in his glass, smelled the rim with his eyes closed, and gave this whole ten-minute lecture about the dark cherry notes and the earthy tannins. I sat on my couch nodding like an idiot while choking back the cheapest grape juice known to man. I should of just told him I broke it, but now he wants to buy another bottle for this weekend. It is just ABSOLUTELY terrifying knowing I will have to drink the real thing and pretend it tastes identical to the box in my fridge. How do I get out of this without looking like a monster?
