I’ve been systematically destroying every "thoughtful" gift my boss gives me.
I've been working at this marketing firm for three years. Every quarter, our boss gives the team these "meaningless" little gifts to show her appreciation. A branded candle. A cheap succulent. A "gold-plated" pen that stops working after two days. Everyone else acts like she’s a saint for doing this. I can't stand the fakeness of it all.
last week she gave us these custom ceramic mugs with our names and a "motivational" quote. I waited until the breakroom was empty and "accidentally" knocked mine off the counter. I watched it shatter and I felt more joy in that moment than I have in months.
I should of just said thank you and put it in a cabinet, but I'm just ABSOLUTELY sick of the performance. We haven't had a real raise since 2022, but she has a budget for mugs? I've started doing it with everything she gives me. The candle went straight into the trash at a gas station on my way home. The succulent "died" because I poured a bit of bleach in the soil when no one was looking.
The rest of the team thinks I’m just clumsy or have bad luck with plants. They actually pity me now. I have to lie to their faces every day about how "devastated" I am that my precious gifts keep breaking. I'm not a monster, but I can't handle the fake corporate gratitude anymore. Why is this even a thing?
