I thought I was broke, but I’m just an idiot
I’m 19, and for the last three months, I’ve been living like a Victorian orphan. I’ve been skipping meals and telling my friends I’m fasting because every time I looked at my bank account, I was missing like fifty to a hundred bucks I couldn't account for. I genuinely thought the universe was just out to get me.
I finally sat down to look at my statements because I was about to sell my PS5 just to pay rent. I’m usually way too lazy to read the fine print, but I used a tool to just audit my last year of transactions so I didn't have to scroll through 400 pages of Starbucks receipts.
Bro, I am the problem.
It turns out that "one-time" $20 fee I paid for a graphic design tool to make a meme in 2024 was actually a hidden $150 annual subscription that just hit. Then it flagged a $40 monthly charge for a premium car wash membership in a city I moved away from six months ago.
Between that and some pro gaming VPN I haven't used since the Minecraft days, I was losing almost $900 a year.
I wasn't poor. I was just accidentally donating my grocery money to billion-dollar companies for services I literally don't have installed. I cancelled everything in five minutes and went out and bought a massive steak. Check your history, guys.
