My husband wanted to make us rich and now I wish he never had and I feel ungrateful
I feel as though I am stuck in a snow globe watching the world go by. People who look at my marriage would think it’s perfect, fairytale story and it was for such a long time. But actually being inside it is cold and lonely and I feel frozen.
My husband and I have known each other since we were both fourteen. He came from a very poor family whereas mine were more like middle class. We were always comfortable and could occasionally even splurge out. But my husband had a really hard life he has a younger brother he always looked after and his parents worked so hard but he never had much of anything.
But he was always so smart, really intelligent and he was always ambitious. We started dating when we were eighteen before we both went off to University. He was in full financial help from the government and he was going to study Economics with mathematics I just went to study English Literature because I’ve always loved to write. I always loved him and it never really bothered me that much we couldn’t go out and do expensive things or go nice places. I just liked him and his mind and the way he was. I knew he wasn’t satisfied and I knew it hurt his pride he couldn’t get me nice things especially because I was more used to them but I really didn’t care.
He worked very hard and when he graduated he got a very good job because of an internship. To this day I still don’t fully know what he does but I know it is something in finance and banking. When we were twenty three and he had been working there for two years was when he could start to slowly afford nicer things - I was working at a publishing house as an assistant to an editor. Started off slow like we could just go out to dinner and he could pay for it, we could go out to the movies, he’d buy me flowers every week. It started to get a bit more after that from around 23 - 25. We’d go out for dinner every week, offered to pay for my nails, buying me jewellery, he bought a new car. We moved into a new flat that he was mostly paying for (I was making my own money but he was making a lot more) This was all fine, this was all perfect actually. Honestly, what girl doesn’t love to be taken out and decked in jewellery and pretty dresses and get to go on holiday. I loved it and I could see how happy he was to be able to do it and to send money to his family and help his brother out with money when he was now at University.
I think it started to go downhill (for me) after he proposed when we were 26. He wanted us to have the most beautiful wedding like anything I wanted because I have always dreamed of a perfect wedding. But also he got promoted and started working so much. So. Much. Leaving the house at 7 coming home at 8. Always on a phone call, checking an email even on weekends. And I’d ask him if anyone else was working this hard and he’d always say he didn’t want to be like anyone else he wanted to be better and have better. I appreciated that, I still do. But I missed being around him. We had the perfect wedding and it was so freaking expensive and there was some sort of like…thrill to know that we could afford that and it wasn’t going to cripple us. Two week honeymoon and he worked remote half the time. On a laptop, stepping away from the pool to take a call.
I am now 29 and I feel like I don’t actually have a husband. I am very rich, from him. I could care less. We have three cars, we have a beautiful house, I have beautiful jewellery, I have a perfect heel collection, I only work two days because I want to. But if I asked my husband to take me for a drive in those cars he couldn’t because there’s always some call or some client or some meeting. I go to sleep in an empty bed and wake up in one more often than not. This big fucking house and it feels so awfully empty all of the time. All of this beautiful jewellery but I can’t wear it on a date with him because we don’t go on those. I have tried so many times to have this conversation that I don’t care about the money and I don’t want the next expensive thing anymore I want him and he listens but nothing changes. He can’t get it out of this head to stop.
When is it ever going to be enough? When will he make enough? When will he stop? It won’t it’s never going to be enough he just wants more and more and more. I know he loves me so much I know he does all of this for me and us. But I don’t want it and I feel so ungrateful for that. I give money to charities, I go on holiday with my friends when I need extra company, I host dinners, I go to nice events.
And sometimes he will come and the time we do get to spend together is amazing. I am the happiest with him because I love him so very much.
But I am miserable. And I can’t tell many people about it because it’s so spoilt and privileged to say. But I mean there is only so much I can do and buy and be gifted by him. It doesn’t make me feel any less lonely.
