I've been taking the same day off every year for 9 years and everyone at work thinks it's a religious holiday
Every October 27th, I take the day off. I've done this at three different jobs now. I put the request in months early, never schedule anything else that day, and don't answer work messages unless something is actually on fire. At my current job, somebody asked me about it a few years ago because they noticed I always block the same date. I said something vague like "it's a personal thing I observe every year." They apparently heard "observe" and decided it was religious. I didn't realize that until my manager apologized for scheduling a meeting on October 27th and told me she'd make sure my "holiday" was respected going forward. I should've corrected her. I didn't. The actual reason is a video game. When I was 16, one of my closest friends and I bought the same game the day it came out. We were completely obsessed with it for months. Every year after that, on the release date, we'd start a fresh save together. Same difficulty. Same dumb arguments about which route to take. Usually the same disgusting pepperoni pizza from this place near his house. He died when we were 22. The first October after that I took the day off because I knew I wasn't going to get anything done anyway. I bought the game again because I'd lost my old copy, ordered pepperoni pizza, turned my phone off and started a new save. I've done it every year since. I don't even finish the game anymore. Usually I play the first two levels, get distracted, eat way too much pizza and spend half the afternoon looking through old screenshots and messages. The stupid part is that at work this has become a Whole Thing. HR has it noted as a recurring personal observance. My manager makes sure nobody schedules me. One coworker once told me she thought it was "really cool" that I was so committed to my faith. I nearly told her right there, but saying "actually I'm going home to play a 14-year-old video game and eat shitty pizza because my dead friend and I used to do it" felt way harder than just nodding. So now every October I get wished a respectful holiday by people who think I'm doing something spiritual. Then I go home, put my phone on silent, order the same pizza and play level one.
