Still thinking of a friend of a friend who died in a stupid way.

A mate of mine had this friend who said he'd jump into a canal without wearing a lifejacket. He said to my mate that since the canal was only four foot deep in the center (getting shallower near the edges), he would be able to stand up. My mate told him that's not a good idea. A week later my mate's friend was found drowned in the canal. He wasn't drunk, he went in and because canal beds are sloped and lined with silt (which acts like a greasy lubricant, that's about as slick as sheet ice), he would've kept having his feet slide out from under him every time he tried to stand up. The edge would've been too tall to step up onto from a non standing position, and since he couldn't stand up, he became exhausted and drowned in low chest deep water. I always tell this story to people who think English narrowboat canals aren't deceptively lethal.
