I lied to my wife and I don’t regret it

Yesterday we came home and found our fur baby had died, my wife was absolutely devastated as this was the first dog she ever owned herself and was her child as we can’t have kids. It was heart wrenching to hear her heart break. Onto the lie. I told my wife that the dog more that likely died of old age as she was already in her grey years, and it was nothing my wife did. I found our dog, she was constantly getting into the garbage, creating a mess. My wife constantly leaves her food bags and wrappers all over the place even though I’ve begged her to properly throw them away. When I found the dog it had a food bag tightly suctioned around her head. It was obviously a horrible accident but still if she knew, she would never forgive herself. I hate carrying this burden of knowledge but I’ll gladly bear it to shield her from the truth.
