I pretend I’m worse with money than I actually am
This feels dumb to admit, but I downplay my finances around almost everyone. If friends complain about being broke, I join in. If someone jokes about overdrafting, I laugh like I’m in the same boat. I never correct the assumption.
The truth is I’m fine. Not rich, not flashy, just stable. I have some money saved up and I’m careful. I don’t carry debt, I don’t impulse buy much, and I plan ahead. But I’ve noticed that when people find out you’re doing okay, the energy shifts. Either they make comments, or they start hinting that you should cover more, or they look at you differently. A few weeks ago a friend was stressing about splitting a weekend trip rental and said don’t worry, I know you’re broke like the rest of us. I almost told her that I wasn’t. Instead I just shrugged and agreed. It’s easier to blend in than to explain myself.
I don’t know why I feel guilty for being financially stable. Maybe it’s leftover stuff from growing up where money was tight and you didn’t talk about it. I just know it feels safer to pretend I’m struggling than to admit I’m not.
